Jealousy Trap

If this entry deserved a title, it would be “Really Really Really”.

Pat talks about how jealous Jen gets sometimes, and describes it as a heat emanating from her body, like a mild sun on the face that he can feel from across the room. We joke, we laugh, a good time is had by all.

Then I remember myself feeling that once, just once, on a day when she was insecure and someone else was talking to me a little too ebulliently. The look. THE LOOK she gave her, like a mother bear staring down someone who got between her and her cubs.

And I remember not liking that feeling, as if I was the one who had to apologize for something, when I had done nothing wrong at all.

But I think to myself, now, how I wouldn’t mind feeling that way just one more time.

The Only One I Keep

I found an old receipt in my wallet while packing up and cleaning today. It was for a VCR I purchased two years ago for the parents of an ex-girlfriend. I got the extra two-year extended warranty, and even though we’ve long been broken up, I still kept the receipt just in case the parents ever decided to contact me if the VCR ever broke. The warranty expired this February though, so I can finally toss the receipt. I hope the VCR is still okay.

One Man's Sip

Glasses on the windowsill

I finally printed off my picture of the glasses on the sill and framed it, which is quite something considering the fact that I have barely any decorations in my room. I was lucky enough to have been given a nice metal frame as a Christmas gift a few years ago, but have not had a decent picture to put in it. Since I don’t have a career going yet, I try to keep a minimalistic amount of furniture until I can afford to invest in long term sets, and for now the picture rests on my coffee table. I wanted a physical manifestation of the image because of the poignancy it evokes in me.

Every time I look at it I can’t help but think of the morning sun seeping through the cracks of blue venetian blinds, of the flourish of green leaves outside the window. I think of lying on a swollen bed with my back to the wall, noticing the brightness of the sun fill the room, talking well past the break of day. I think of sleeping next to someone, holding her head, drawing on her face, seeing the early light bring out the sunflowers in her eyes. I remember how we’d go to sleep, placing our frames on the windowsill before succumbing to exhaustion.

Perhaps I’m so affected by this image, this bittersweet memory, because of how much I relish the act of sleeping next to someone. One of my favourite parts of a relationship is being able to hold someone before losing consciousness. I suppose it betrays a vulnerability, a certain unparalleled intimacy, and vulnerability is something that I’ve always been attracted to.

But how odd it is that this may mean so much to me, yet mean so little to another. That even someone sharing this experience with me may think of it in passing, as some ephemeral experience, not worth remembering.

What do we take with ourselves when we fall apart? Do we keep the memories or the emotions? Do we only take the good and leave the bad?

With this picture I try to take everything. I don’t want to hide from hurt, I don’t want to neglect any feelings. I choose to see the image as a beautiful thing, a frame in time when I felt something greater than most things I’ve felt in my life. I try to turn the pain into productivity and gain from my experience. I look at this picture and become affected by everything it means to me.

Even if it means nothing to anyone else.

Event Horizon

I was talking to Eugene, or Yoog as I used to call him, the other day after having no contact with him for over a decade. It was good to reminisce about the good times we had so long ago, me going to Australia for the first time to meet a friend of my mothers’, and him coming to visit from Australia, to stay with me.

It was odd to hear that I affected his decision to shift the focus of his card collection to baseball, as odd as it was to find out that one of my ex’s would scream my name in her mind while masturbating.

I’m surprised, astonished, at how much influence I could ever have on anyone. I still can’t believe it, since a card collection can be such a significant part of a young boys life, and unattractive Chinese guys aren’t generally the object of anyones’ fantasy.

The more I think about it though, the more I realize all the little things that I’ve done to affect people, whether it’s someone’s choice of university (which, I feel, is no small decision), or how I could ever bring someone to tears.

I’ve felt like my life has been so worthless for so long that I’ve been blinded to the part I’ve played in the life of others. It’s only with this new information, this catalyst, that I’m able to begin to realize that I’m not so worthless after all.

There have always been people whom I admire and respect. It’s only these people who really have an affect on me. After all, hearing hurtful words from a person you look up to is much worse than from someone you don’t have any respect for. I’ll always wonder if it’s respect which allowed me to have influence on others, or whether there was some other reason, such as love or friendship.

And perhaps, with time, there will be more.
