Scotland, Day 2: Edinburgh

My vacation has finally begun, marked by a chance to do some laundry after sweating in the same five sets of clothes for the last 10 days. I tend to travel to put myself out of my comfort zone, but that’s impossible here with Dennis taking care of me. I offer to lend a hand in any way I can, but he refuses my help cause he takes pleasure in taking care of his guests. I’d feel guilty or beholden to him if I wasn’t the same way, but I understand, so I happily surrender myself to his hospitality.

I’m here on a clean break, on my own terms, a detox of the mind and heart and lungs, with absolutely no plans at all. I know that as long as I have Dennis for company, I’ll have a great time.

Scottish breakfast

A proper Scottish breakfast. The meat patties are the UK version of bacon, and the round black cylinder is black pudding, a sausage made of blood mixed with oatmeal with a taste that reminds me of liver.

two ice cream

I found it really strange that Dennis asked for two ice cream without specifying a flavour. Turns out they only have one, an ice cream they likely churned themselves. You can also request a chocolate flake to be added in. Dennis doesn’t let me pay for anything.

fishheads

At the local fish market. It’s easy to get fresh fish with so much water around.

3D TV

Dennis has a 3D TV set. The effect is pretty impressive.

  1. That breakfast looks like my mums’ alright; burnt and dry. Blood pudding sounds awful.… but maybe my Korean husband who eats Soondae (blood sausage) would like it. Liver? ick.
I guess the sweets would make up for it though!

Let’s see how much of a brogue you can muster on return.
