My Moo Minicards are in! I wanted a set to hand out at art shows and to people I ask to model for me. I also throw a few in with each print I sell. People have really enjoyed them; many have a hard time deciding which one they want to take. The great thing about the Minicards is that you can order up to 100 different pictures on the front, so that people get a sense of the range of photography you do.
Construction
The first thing I noticed about the Minicards is that they don’t have a glossy finish, so there isn’t that sharp impact one gets from a photo. Instead, they’re covered with a matte type of varnish, which protects the card quite well from scratches. Another advantage is that there’s no worry of fingerprints mucking up the picture.
The cards are printed on a high-quality, thick stock, which feels very nice in the hand. They’re considerably smaller than regular business cards, which makes them stand out. Even the box they come in is made from a nice solid plastic.
Print resolution is a little low, but only when compared to a photograph. The colour halftone is just visible to the naked eye. I doubt most people would notice though; at such a size, they look great.
Delivery and Customer Service
Unfortunately, the cards arrived quite late. What is normally supposed to be 5–9 business days for arrival turned into 16 business days. The two coupons which came with it had already expired. I sent a frustrated letter to the Moo department, and someone named Daniel Morrow compensated me with a free re-order. Moo knows how to treat their customers right.
Update: My reorder came in right on time. Turns out there’s an issue with delivering to business names at a residential address, which would be the post office’s fault, and not Moo’s.
Supernana Card Holders
Supernana card holders are used to carry Moo Minicards so they don’t get damaged in a bag or pocket, and are made of 100% wool. There’s a drop-shaped hole in the centre for the thumb, but I found it very difficult to remove any cards this way. Even with only two cards in there, the finish is too slippery to get any kind of grip on them. Instead, it becomes a funny shaped window to show off your cards. It’s better to take all the cards out when handing them out anyway, as people like to choose which one(s) they want to keep.
At first I had a hard time believing that 14 cards were going to fit in this little case, but sure enough, after gradually adding more and more, I had 14 of them in there at once. The case needs to be broken in. Occasionally, a corner of one card will get stuck on the fabric and get nicked, but other than that, it’s not too bad.
If being used for outside wear, I’d recommend clipping the holder onto a bag or coat with a carabiner. That way you can easily take it off if it rains or snows.

Your cards look like professional ads until you notice some of the content, which makes them really different in context of a distributable card. Your work is always so crystalline that it’s really interesting to see the content you would NOT find in a calling card in such a glossy form.
I’m really kicking myself for not ordering these when they had their free promo. I really have no use for them other than having them so the text would probably say something like “Tiana Rocks!” which is true, but I don’t need to give people a card to tell them that…

@fathima — I think we’re some of the few who look at colour the way we do. That’s one of the reasons why I’m drawn to your pictures; the colour just jumps out. Which is why we have this common understanding of why it’s important to have colour coordination for silly things like our websites.

And yes, it’s always nice to see one’s work in a less-conventional medium. Usually the rule is the-bigger-the-better for prints, but sometimes it’s a smaller size that makes something stand out.
@Tiana — I think you should have them made to say stuff like “Tiana is pregnant…please massage accordingly” or “There’s always room for cookies!”. Sometimes, people just need to be reminded.

I love the MOO minicards, I ordered my first set in the Fall and it’s just been a way to connect with people at conferences. Instead of simply, here’s my business card, it tends to develop into a more personal conversation about personal interests and travels. I agree about the customer service– all the stories I’ve heard about them dealing with customers has been positive.
They just recently had an Easter Egg Hunt on their blog, http://www.moo.com/blog — it was a lot of fun to participate in and I was pretty excited when I was randomly selected to receive a pack of free greeting cards. Will hopefully use that soon and see how the pics turn out after I get my camera repaired. The sensor fizzed out on me. :(
