It kinda sounds like Waking Life, by Richard Linklater...have you seen it? One of my favourite theories from the movie is that the entire universe is a giant chemical reaction (including our bodies, which are made from basic elements), and since chemical reactions follow set, deterministic paths, we're all on a predestined path. And we like to think that we're in control of our actions. ;) I’ve never heard of that movie, but I’ll definitely see if i can find it in my video store.
