The Crematorium

I had the chance to visit the crematorium where the ashes of my maternal grandparents are stored. On looking out to one of the hills in the cemetery, one can see that it’s literally covered with graves. Burial is being replaced by cremation nowadays, due to the lengthy procedure and high cost of maintaining a grave. People have begun to accept cremation more and more as a dignified way to be preserved. My grandparents share the same tablet, which has golden lettering and is very respectable.

When I was young, I looked up to my grandfather the most. He was the smartest person I knew, and taught me lots of little odds and ends. He was born and raised in China, and entered one of the few universities there after high school. Being able to attend university was quite an accomplishment back then, and he only had one year left before the civil war broke out. He joined the ill-fated Nationalist side, where he would have had a chance at being a commissioned officer had there not been a need for English speaking Chinese people. He spoke English fluently, so he was used as a translator for the British troops. He was shot in the arm once, which he recovered from, and fled to Hong Kong to avoid prosecution when the war was over. There he met and married my grandmother, who was born and raised in Hong Kong, fled to Viet Nam during the Japanese invasion, but came back to Hong Kong once it was over. My grandfather assumed a career as a meteorologist, and my grandmother became a housewife to three daughters and one son. They both lived long in Hong Kong until they passed away.

A Look At Hong Kong Island

With Kowloon in the background on the other side of the water. Both sides of my family are currently on the Kowloon side of Hong Kong. The tallest building in all of Hong Kong is the one which stands out highest in the picture (86 floors).

Seven Thousand Miles To Watch TV

Sometimes I notice commercials here that are very similar to the ones in Canada. The new McDonalds “I’m Lovin’ It” marketing campaign has reached as far as Beijing (although it’s Mandarin rap) and Hong Kong (with Cantonese lyrics). The commercials have been redone, but have the same look and feel as their North American counterparts. Even the courtesy warnings in the theatres are the same, with the two Disney moose characters from Brother Bear, although they speak Chinese. The Coke commercials are different though, and have a much more distinctive Asian flavour.

Maybe It's The Setting

There seems to be lots of cute girls in Hong Kong, although this might just be my recent lack of action speaking (that added to the whole cute phase I’ve been going through lately, such as WOAH ISOBEL WITH TIE). I’ve always been of the opinion that Chinese people are rarely attractive, but the ones who are, are VERY attractive, so this sort of changes everything.

A Comfortable Fellow

I met one of the coolest, most outspoken people the other day. He was a Chinese man, I’m guessing in his early 60’s, who was an associate of my uncle’s. Somehow, he kept thanking my uncle for favours without making things awkward (I’ve always been a terrible thanker, which is part of the reason I’m hesitant in receiving gifts). He spoke with a booming voice, and used English expressions mixed in with his Cantonese dialogue, the way Russians would use French in the 1800’s.
